Feeling a little cranky at work lately? You are not alone. According to the new Gallup State of the American Workforce poll – 70% of American workers say they “hate” their job or are “disengaged.” The cost to U.S. companies – up to $550 BILLION dollars per year in lost productivity.
Most motivational speakers would suggest that what makes a successful company – is happy, creative, motivated, productive people – and that includes everyone from the CEO to the line worker to payroll to the front desk receptionist. So why isn’t everyone more consistently happy, creative, motivated and productive? It could have something to do with the fact most people fall PRIMARILY into two categories:
1. Reactive people. They go along, doing the best they can (some of them even less than that….) and when “stuff” happens, they spend a lot of valuable time being frustrated, blaming other people, bemoaning their outcast fate thinking, “I don’t get paid enough to put up with this crap.” They are often cranky, irritable, negative and not so easy to work with. These people LOSE customers for you. Important: Their attitudes are contagious and infect other people.
2. Proactive people. These people are on the constant lookout for ways they can make things better. They know that a positive, happy attitude makes them more creative, productive, easier to be around, and more promotable. They handle problems almost eagerly – like they are welcoming an opportunity to find solutions and shine. They laugh, compliment others’ efforts, and are phenomenal team players. Customers, clients, guests or patients LOVE these people! They sing their praises to anyone who will listen and refer all their friends and family to them! Important: Their attitudes are contagious and infect other people.
And in a nutshell – what motivational speakers do for you, is to help move people from group one to group two – and help group two people STAY in group two. The reeeeally good ones do it with a whole lot of humor, fun and engagement. They also give people tools to help them get back into group two when they invariable will slip back into group one.
“What?” You say. “You can get them into group two but they might not stay? So this “motivation” thing doesn’t last?”
To that I will leave you with a quote from the Masterful Mac Daddy Motivational Speaker of all times, Zig Ziglar: “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.”
