I am pitiful when it comes to hanging on to prescription glasses. Absolutely pitiful. In the last month I bought FOUR pair of prescription glasses. One for distance, one for reading and two sunglasses. And in the same month, I lost BOTH pair of the sunglasses – one on an airplane (motivational speakers fly a LOT!) and the other one, I think, grew legs and ran away from home. Regardless, yesterday it was time to go BACK to Lenscrafters and get another pair of prescription sunglasses. I was not happy. I did not want to spend more money. I was grinding my teeth all the way there.
And when I walked into the store, it hit me like a 1,000 megawatt lightbulb! That SMILE! That amazing, fantastic, “I’ll-cure-what-ails-you” smile. It was being offered up by Rachel, one of the store managers on duty. I had absolutely no choice. I was a totally helpless victim to its power. As cranky, unhappy and miserable as I was, I smiled right back.
And I kept smiling – for the next 30 minutes while I bought TWO more pair of prescription sunglasses.
So, as I see it, several things happened here.
- She instantly made me feel great
- Because I felt great I bought more
- Because I felt great I was a WHOLE lot easier for her to deal with, which made her job easier
- Everyone won
Moral of the story: Never, ever, EVER underestimate the power of a genuine, sincere, happy smile. Oh, and maybe someone should invent a locator chip in sunglass frames.
