As a motivational speaker on dealing with stress and change, I’m always on the lookout for the latest information that will help people manage the “stuff” that bogs them down. And there is a technique that I have used for years that is not only extremely effective, but is also free, fast and fantastic! And – get this – it’s backed by science!
Quite simply put – your brain does not know the difference between something real and something imagined. It responds the same way to both. Well, you know this, right? Ever watch a scary movie and feel your heart rate go up, your palms start to sweat and your level of fear sky rocket? Yes. What you were watching was not “real,” but your brain and then your physiology responded as if it was.
Well, hey, if this is true, then why not use it to our advantage?
Why not create a “HAPPY PLACE” in your mind that you can visit any time you want to?
The picture I include in this post is my actual Happy Place. It is a beach close to where I live and I snapped this shot one night on a sunset walk. But here’s the deal. I don’t need to actually GO to this beach to feel the calming, relaxing HAPPY feelings of being there in person. I can simply close my eyes, turn off the world and IMAGINE going there in my brain and I’m like….
“Ahhhhhhhhhh. You can’t get me now, all you bad people.”
So here’s your ticket. When you need to get away, either go ahead and use MY Happy Place or create your own! Choose a picture that you have taken of some relaxing place you have visited or one that you love from a magazine. Put THAT picture in your brain, take a 3 minute break and escape. I promise you, your brain, your emotions and your physiology will thank you!
