It’s true. There’s tremendous value in choosing a word that you want to define your upcoming year. A word that will act as a guiding principle for all your actions, choices and intentions. But after January 1, after you have selected your word, how do you make that word actually show up for you? How do you remember to consciously apply that word to your life each and every day?
Enter: Anchors.
Anchors are any physical tools or objects that act as a reminder for you. In this case, an anchor would link your actions to your intention.
Take, for instance, my word for 2019:
GRATITUDE
I believe that focusing on what I am grateful for accomplishes several important things:
- I literally draw more of those good things into my life.
- I feel happy as I am thinking of those things.
- That happy feeling follows me longer into my day.
- I’m nicer to be around for other people.
So how do I remember to focus on what I’m grateful for more often? I start every day with a Gratitude Shower. I actually printed out the words, “It’s time for my Gratitude Shower” on a colored sheet of paper, laminated it, punched a hole in the top of it, ran a plastic lanyard through it and hung it over the faucet in my shower. And…Voila! Every single morning, and/or evening, I spend conscious time thinking about things I am grateful for. The good feelings I generate in the process either propel me off into my day with a lot more joy and happiness, or send me to sleep with a smile on my face.
So what is your word for 2019? And, more importantly, what anchor can you create to help you MANIFEST that word in your life!
